about

Bruiseblood is the by-product of my experiments with creating a modular sampler to facilitate improvisation. Historically a sampler is prepared carefully in the context of a studio, and often to perform a specific song. This series of tracks embraces using a sampler as a crude tool to search for, touch, contemplate, repeat and shred slices of ephemeral sound. The 'blank' samplers were fed with a variety of sources including a Roland D-20, a Meng Qi Wingie2, a few Creative Commons videos I found on YouTube, but primarily with a microphone. The SM7B mic was aimed at sources including my voice, a kalimba, some stones from a creek bed, a chef's mixing bowl, and speaker feedback. The samplers (primarily a Korg Microsampler and a Squid Salmple) ran through some delay pedals and were played by hand or sequenced with euclidean generators. Nothing was saved on the samplers, just the recorded performances on my MacBook. These improvised recordings were overdubbed with layers of field recordings, a Moog Minitaur, a few 909 moments, and a small selection of effects. Bruiseblood was recorded and mixed between October 2022 and February 2023 on Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung, and Dja Dja Wurrung country.
